GROW Series Part 2: Setup WooCommerce & Shopify Discount Coupons (Free Version)

In Part 2 of our GROW Series, we’re breaking it down, showing you how to master WooCommerce discount coupons & Shopify discount coupons using only free tools which come included with each platform.

We can clearly see that out-of-the-box, Shopify supports more features than WooCommerce. Furthermore, some of the features such as Buy X Get Y & Customer Segmentation, are definitely great options to have.

In Shopify, you can access the Shopify Discount Coupons for free by heading to the “Discount” tab & creating a discount coupon!

When creating an ecommerce discount coupon, you have the options to give Amount off products, Buy X get Y, Amount off order, & Free Shipping.

You have these discount coupon options in the Shopify free version:

• Manual or Automatic Discount Require the customer to input the coupon or let it be applied automatically if customer’s purchase meets the requirements.
• Set Discount Value & Collection/Products Discount value can be in % or fixed amount. You can limit the coupon to specific collections or products even.
• Customer Eligibility Limit the coupon to specific customer segments. Great for building VIP lists.
• Minimum Purchase Requirements You can set minimum purchase amount or minimum item quantity, or none at all.
• Maximum Discount Uses You can limit the number of times this coupon can be used, & if it can be used only once per customer.
• Combinations Allow or disallow your coupon to be used in conjunction with other coupons.
• Active Dates You can set the start date & time of the coupon validity, as well as the end date & time.

WooCommerce discount coupons are pretty similar. Start creating coupons by heading to “Marketing” > “Coupons” > “Add New Coupon”

Unlike Shopify, WooCommerce coupon options are consolidated in one panel.

For WooCommerce, the below discount coupon options are available:

• Discount Type Choose between % discount, or fixed cart / fixed product discount. For fixed cart, the coupon applies to the entire cart. For fixed product, the coupon value is multiplied by number of products on cart.
• Free Shipping Add the “free shipping” feature to the coupon.
• Expiry Date Set the expiry date for the coupon.
• Minimum & Maximum Spend Set the minimum & maximum spend requirement / limit for the coupon.
• Individual Use Condition Configure the coupon for individual use without other discounts / coupons.
• Coupon Products & Categories Include or exclude products & categories which the coupon can apply to.
• Usage Limits Set the number of times the coupon can be used, and how many times a user can use it as well.

It’s really up to your imagination! A straight-forward way would be to use coupons to support & direct your ecommerce campaigns.

Use them to grow your top funnel via customer acquisition & referrals. Boost sales & take market share during peak periods with date-sensitive coupons.

Trigger buys during slow periods or even tag coupons for use with new products to push for try-outs!

Ultimately remember that creating the coupon is just one part of the campaign, the other part being marketing communications to let customers know.
